John Barrett was born in Hobart, Tasmania and brought up in Edinburgh.  He was elected to the City of Edinburgh Council for two terms and then elected as the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh West at Westminster

After building up the second largest majority for his party anywhere in the UK, he stood down as an MP after two terms, remaining undefeated in all his Council and UK Parliamentary elections.

He designed a house for his daughter and her family on the small Greek island of Kalymnos, where he expected to visit his grandchildren in the future but, after a crisis, which forced their return to Scotland, the house lay empty.  It was now the perfect place to go to write the story of his life.

All he wanted was peace and quiet where he could relax and write but seeing the island and its people suffering from corruption, nepotism and in decline, he finds it difficult to resist when they ask him to help them and to stand for election as The Mayor of Kalymnos.

Having never lost an election in his life, he is not about to start now.

This event is to launch John’s book, second edition of The Mayor of Kalymnos which includes Return to Kalymnos.  Discounted copies of the book will be available to buy at the event.
